The tabletop mountains of the Pakaraima range are considered to be some of the oldest geological formations on Earth, dating back over 2 billion years. Apparently, that's how long it takes to make something as wondrous as Mount Roraima. There, at more than 9,000 feet above sea level, you can literally stand among the clouds. On 9 October 1937, Jimmie Angel tried to land his Flamingo monoplane El Río Caroní atop Auyán-tepui, but the plane was damaged when the wheels sank into the marshy ground. Angel and his three companions, including his wife Marie, were forced to descend the tepui on foot. It took them 11 days to make their way back to civilization by the gradually sloping back side, but news of their adventure spread and the waterfall was named Angel Falls in his honor.
Catatumbo lightning is an atmospheric phenomenon that occurs over the mouth of the Catatumbo River where it empties into Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela. Catatumbo means "House of Thunder". It originates from a mass of storm clouds at an altitude of more than 1 km (0.6 mi), and occurs during 140 to 160 nights a year, nine hours per day, and with lightning flashes from 16 to 40 times per minute.
